Thailand and Timor-Leste have agreed to expand cooperation across defence, trade, development and regional affairs following the official visit of Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão to Thailand on 9–10 October 2026, hosted by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul.

The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and ASEAN cooperation, while welcoming a new mechanism for regular bilateral consultations.

Key developments:

  • MoU signed establishing a bilateral consultation mechanism between both foreign ministries.
  • Plans to negotiate a Rice Trade MoU and accelerate an Air Services Agreement to improve food security and direct air links.
  • Expanded cooperation on defence, transnational crime, agriculture, education and development
  • Thailand reaffirmed support for Timor-Leste’s ASEAN integration and preparations for its prospective 2029 ASEAN Chairship.

Both leaders said they would work to translate the visit’s outcomes into practical cooperation benefiting both countries.
