Mali’s military says it has regained control after coordinated attacks targeted Gao, Sévaré and other northern towns, while separatist forces announced a new offensive in Anefis.

Key developments:

  • Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) spokesperson Mohamed Elmaouloud Ramadane said separatists were targeting Anefis.
  • The Malian army said the situation was under control and claimed 20 militants had been killed near Sévaré.
  • FLA official Rawani Ahmed Bouya claimed Anefis had come under separatist control, though this could not be independently verified.

Analysts said the attacks may be aimed at strengthening separatist positions in northern Mali following earlier territorial gains. Mali, alongside neighbouring Burkina Faso and Niger, continues to face insurgencies involving separatist groups and militants linked to al-Qaeda and Islamic State.
