The United Nations has renewed calls for global rules governing artificial intelligence (AI), with UN Secretary-General António Guterres urging countries to prioritise safety, transparency and equal access during the inaugural UN Global Dialogue on AI Governance in Geneva.

He said AI governance should protect children, uphold human rights, expand access for developing countries and ensure major AI data centres transition to renewable energy by 2030. President of the UN General Assembly Annalena Baerbock also highlighted concerns over the growing misuse of AI-generated deepfakes.

Key developments:

  • António Guterres proposed a global AI Child Safety Pledge and stronger international AI safety standards.
  • More than 20 countries backed a UN initiative to strengthen AI capacity in developing nations.
  • A second UN Global Dialogue on AI Governance is scheduled for May 2027 in New York.
