The India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) entered into force on Wednesday (15 Jul), reducing tariffs on thousands of goods and expanding access for businesses, professionals and service providers in both markets.
India’s Trade Minister Piyush Goyal said the agreement would create “new avenues for trade, investment and innovation”, as both countries seek to strengthen economic ties.
Key developments include:
- UK tariff cuts: Britain will remove duties on 96.8% of tariff lines, covering 97.7% of trade value.
- Indian exports: Duty-free access will support sectors including textiles, leather, footwear, marine products, gems and processed foods.
- Services expansion: The pact opens access across 137 sub-sectors, including IT, finance, education and professional services.
- Procurement opportunities: Businesses gain access to government procurement markets in both countries.
The agreement also includes measures easing professional mobility and reducing barriers for eligible Indian workers and employers operating in the UK.
