US President Donald Trump and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun met at the White House on Tuesday (21 Jul) for talks focused on Lebanon’s security situation, regional stability and efforts to end hostilities between Lebanon and Israel.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, President Trump said Lebanon had “been a very mistreated country” for decades and highlighted the challenges facing the country, including the issue of Hezbollah.
President Aoun thanked Trump and the US administration for supporting what he described as a historic framework, saying: “The ultimate objective is ending the state of hostility between Lebanon and Israel forever.”
Aoun added that stability and security were shared goals, saying: “Together we will be able to achieve that success in that regard.”
The meeting comes as the United States continues to mediate discussions between Lebanon and Israel following a framework agreement aimed at reducing tensions.
Talks have focused on the withdrawal of Israeli forces from parts of southern Lebanon, the deployment of the Lebanese army, and addressing Hezbollah’s armed presence.
Recent developments have followed a period of relative calm after previous fighting between Israel and Hezbollah.
