Venezuela’s interim government and opposition representatives have completed the first round of transition talks, describing the discussions as constructive and agreeing to continue negotiations aimed at democratic reform and national reconciliation. The dialogue follows the launch of formal talks earlier this month, with both sides seeking a roadmap for political transition.
Authorities also announced the release of 131 political prisoners under alternative liberty measures, a move welcomed by some human rights groups as a confidence-building step, while calls continue for the release of remaining detainees.
The joint statement commits both sides to initiating reforms to the Organic Law governing the Supreme Tribunal of Justice (TSJ) as part of a broader effort to strengthen Venezuela’s judicial framework. It also calls for recovering Venezuela’s international reserve assets held in the UK to finance reconstruction following the devastating 2026 earthquakes.
- Acting President Delcy Rodríguez’s interim government and opposition delegates agreed to continue negotiations.
- The talks focus on democratic reforms, political participation and future governance.
The outcome marks incremental progress in Venezuela’s political transition, though significant issues—including electoral reforms, broader prisoner releases and long-term constitutional arrangements—remain subject to future negotiations.
