Israel and Greece have signed a defence agreement worth approximately €3 billion (£2.6bn) to establish a multi-layered air defence system for Greece.
The agreement was signed in Tel Aviv by Amir Baram, Director General of Israel’s Ministry of Defense, and Yannis Boras, head of Greece’s Procurement Directorate. Israel described it as the largest defence export deal between the two countries.
The ‘Achilles Shield’ programme will combine David’s Sling, BARAK MX and SPYDER air defence systems with MMR multi-mission radars and a national command-and-control system.
A separate €26 million agreement covers Rafael’s DRONE DOME counter-drone systems. The countries will also expand industrial cooperation, including knowledge and technology transfers to Greek industry.
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said the agreement reflects shared strategic interests and strengthens security cooperation between the two countries.
Geopolitically, the agreement strengthens an already expanding Israel-Greece strategic partnership in the Eastern Mediterranean. It also reflects Greece’s broader military modernisation and concerns about evolving regional threats, including Türkiye’s growing capabilities. The deal could further increase Israel’s role as a defence technology partner for European states.
