Russian President Vladimir Putin met Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Bishkek on Monday (31 Aug), with the two leaders discussing bilateral relations, economic cooperation and international affairs.
Xi said Russia-China relations would continue to deepen, stating that “the foundation of our bilateral relations will only grow stronger” as both countries work towards what he described as a better future.
He also highlighted the SCO’s role amid growing global uncertainty, saying its mission was to “maintain stability and promote the development of our region”.
Putin described Russia and China as having an “exemplary” comprehensive partnership and strategic cooperation, based on friendship, sovereignty, equality and mutual benefit.
He pointed to expanding cooperation in energy, manufacturing, transport, logistics and space, while highlighting a 34% increase in agricultural trade and a 43% rise in Chinese tourist flows to Russia during the first six months of 2026.
Putin also expressed condolences over the deadly landslide in China’s Tibet Autonomous Region and said Moscow remained committed to strengthening cooperation with Beijing across international organisations.
