US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasised dialogue, economic cooperation and stable US-China relations during remarks at the White House in Washington, D.C., on Thursday (24 Sep), as the two leaders sought to highlight areas of common interest amid broader strategic competition.
Trump said the two leaders had developed “a truly great friendship” based on “mutual respect and the vital interests of our people”. He pointed to the Board of Trade, established during his visit to China in May, as “a brand new mechanism” that had been “unbelievably successful”, adding: “If we focus on our common interests, I’m confident there is much we can achieve.”
Xi said China and the United States, “as two major countries”, shared “a historic responsibility of advancing human development and progress”. He added that while competition between the two powers was inevitable, “our competition should be a healthy one and should be kept within bounds”, stressing that “China and the United States stand to gain from cooperation and will both lose in confrontation”.
Xi also called for stronger communication across diplomacy, economic affairs, law enforcement and people-to-people exchanges, saying the two countries “must hold the line of no conflict and no confrontation”.
Despite the conciliatory tone of the meeting, the relationship between the United States and China remains defined by strategic competition alongside deep economic interdependence.
While both governments have sought to preserve dialogue and avoid escalation through leader-level engagement, significant differences persist over trade, advanced technology, artificial intelligence, Taiwan and broader geopolitical influence.
Analysts broadly view the recent series of Trump-Xi meetings as an effort to manage rivalry rather than resolve it, with both sides seeking greater stability while continuing to compete for economic, technological and strategic advantage.
