US President Donald Trump said he held wide-ranging discussions with Xi Jinping covering Taiwan, Iran and nuclear policy, describing the exchanges as direct but non-committal on key security questions.

Trump said the two leaders discussed Taiwan’s political status and regional stability, stating: “I don’t think so” when asked about the risk of conflict, and adding he believed Xi “does not want to see a war.” On Iran, he said Xi “feels strongly they can’t have a nuclear weapon,” describing “a very good understanding” between both sides.

When pressed on whether the US would defend Taiwan in a conflict scenario, Trump said: “I don’t want to say that… I’m not going to say that.”

The summit ended with cautious framing from both sides, as Donald Trump and Xi Jinping emphasised continued dialogue over escalation, particularly on Taiwan and regional security.

While Iran was identified as a limited area of alignment, major disputes on military posture, trade and sovereignty remained unresolved, with both leaders signalling a preference for managing tensions rather than reaching immediate agreements.
