Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Iran has conveyed a “concrete seven day plan” to the United States through Qatar, which he said could lead to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz within a week if accepted.
Speaking during a UN Security Council media stakeout on Friday (25 Sep), Araghchi said: “If the necessary conditions are met, the strait can be reopened and normal maritime passage restored within seven days.”
He said the timeline would begin once the United States accepted the proposal, adding that Washington would have four or five days to implement commitments already contained in a memorandum of understanding. “On day six, the trade will be open and on day seven, the talks with the US will be started for the final deal on mutually agreed subjects,” he said.
Araghchi added that “the choice now rests with the United States”, while reiterating that Iran “does not accept coercion, threat, or intimidation” and would not surrender its sovereign rights under pressure.
