Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov accused parts of Europe of encouraging militarisation and historical revisionism during remarks to journalists following the High-Level Week of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York on Saturday (26 Sep).
Speaking after the annual diplomatic gathering, Lavrov criticised European support for Ukraine, alleging that some countries were creating “a pantheon of heroes” and supporting what he described as “blatant Nazism”. He also condemned the removal of monuments commemorating those who fought against Nazi Germany, claiming that “all memory of those who defeated Nazism is being erased from textbooks and through the demolition of monuments”.
Referring to comments by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz about Germany becoming “the leading military power in Europe”, Lavrov argued the phrase “once again” was significant, adding: “It is not a slip of the tongue.”
Lavrov went into describe what he called “a very dangerous trend”, claiming some analysts believe Europe is witnessing “attempts to create a fourth reich”. His remarks reflect Russia’s longstanding criticism of Western support for Ukraine and European defence policy.
