Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) that “tectonic shifts” are reshaping international politics, arguing that “a fairer, multipolar world order is emerging before our very eyes” as countries in the Global South and East become “sovereign centres of development”.
Lavrov said this approach forms the basis of Russia’s foreign policy, while accusing what he described as the “Western minority” of seeking to preserve its global influence. He also criticised the United States and European countries over the conflict in Ukraine, claiming they were obstructing peace efforts and continuing military support for Kyiv.
Reaffirming Moscow’s position, Lavrov said Russia’s objectives in what it calls its “special military operation” “will be achieved” and that “peace will reign again”. He also criticised the current United Nations leadership, arguing it had failed to uphold the principles of the UN Charter in relation to the Ukraine conflict.
In his broader remarks, Lavrov also called for UN Security Council reform, backed greater international cooperation on cybersecurity and artificial intelligence, reiterated Russia’s support for organisations including BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), and concluded by calling for an international security framework based on the principle of “equal and indivisible security”.
