Former Democratic Republic of the Congo President Joseph Kabila, who led the country from 2001 to 2019, has announced the creation of the Front for the Refoundation of the Nation (FRN), a new political and military coalition that includes the M23 rebel group and other armed factions operating in eastern DR Congo.
Coalition adviser Claude Ibalanky said the FRN aims to unite opposition forces to restore the country’s institutions, stating it would act “by any means necessary, including the use of force”. President Félix Tshisekedi’s government had not immediately responded.
Key developments:
- Corneille Nangaa, former lenader of the Congo River Alliance (AFC), was named one of four FRN vice presidents. The alliance brought together political groups and armed factions, including M23, in opposition to Tshisekedi’s government.
- The announcement could further complicate the Doha peace talks between the Congolese government and AFC/M23 rebels.
- Kabila, who denies allegations against him, remains under US sanctions and was previously sentenced to death in absentia by a Congolese military court over charges including treason, war crimes and crimes against humanity.
The move adds fresh uncertainty to efforts to end the long-running conflict in mineral-rich eastern DR Congo.
