NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) General Alexus G. Grynkewich has reaffirmed that NATO remains a defensive alliance focused on protecting its members and preserving peace.
Speaking at the Warsaw Security Forum on Monday (12 Oct) in Warsaw, Poland, Grynkewich said NATO has “no plans, no intentions, and no ambitions beyond the protection of our people and the defence of our territory.”
The NATO commander said the Alliance’s defensive nature should not be mistaken for weakness, warning that “if someone is foolish enough to attack us, we will fight” and ensure any attack against an Ally proves “utterly futile.”
Grynkewich added that conflict is “not imminent or inevitable”, but said deterrence requires military readiness and planning for possible threats.
In his broader remarks, Grynkewich outlined NATO’s “Theory of Victory” as a denial defence strategy focused on preventing an adversary from achieving its objectives. The approach aims to “block” an initial attack, “blunt” continued offensive operations and, if required, “break” the attacking force’s ability to continue its campaign through coordinated action across the land, air, maritime, space and cyber domains.
