The International Monetary Fund (IMF) says global financial markets have remained resilient in 2026, supported by strong corporate earnings and investment linked to artificial intelligence (AI), but warned that financial stability risks remain elevated.
The Global Financial Stability Report 2026, published on Tuesday (13 Oct), said AI investment has helped offset the economic impact of geopolitical tensions and policy uncertainty. However, the IMF cautioned that weaker or less durable AI investment and profitability could trigger corrections in AI-related assets and broader market volatility.
Key points from the report:
- AI-related market corrections could be amplified by rising leverage, concentrated exposures and increased reliance on AI-linked assets.
- Higher sovereign bond yields, driven by renewed inflation pressures or fiscal concerns, could increase market instability due to high public debt levels and rollover risks.
- Cyber threats are becoming a growing systemic risk as financial services become more digital and interconnected.
- IMF stress tests found the global banking system would remain broadly resilient under adverse scenarios, although vulnerabilities remain among some institutions.
The IMF said policymakers should strengthen financial resilience by rebuilding fiscal buffers, containing excessive leverage, improving cyber resilience and enhancing transparency across financial markets.
The IMF’s assessment highlights how geopolitical developments are increasingly connected to global financial stability.
Ongoing conflicts, shifting energy markets, rising public debt and competition in emerging technologies such as AI are creating new channels through which political risks can affect economies and financial markets.
As governments navigate these pressures, maintaining resilience and international cooperation will remain central to managing future shocks.
