Anti-government protests have continued in Albania, with demonstrations in Tirana entering a sixth day on Sunday (18 Oct) as protesters call for the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama.

The protests, involving mainly students and opposition demonstrators, have focused on concerns including university conditions, education costs, corruption allegations and economic opportunities for young people. Clashes between protesters and police have resulted in injuries and damage to public buildings.

Key developments:

  • Edi Rama, Albania’s prime minister, has rejected calls to step down, arguing governments should change through democratic elections.
  • Protesters have linked wider grievances to corruption concerns and dissatisfaction with public services.
  • The unrest comes as Albania continues efforts towards European Union accession.

The demonstrations represent a significant domestic challenge for Rama’s government as Albania balances political stability, public concerns and its long-term European integration ambitions.
