Romania’s parliament has approved a minority government led by diplomat Luca Niculescu, ending a six-month political deadlock that intensified economic and fiscal pressures in the EU member state.
Niculescu’s cabinet secured approval with 280 votes in favour and 58 against, creating a temporary political arrangement with a six-month window to restore stability and advance key reforms.
“I cannot promise miracles,” Niculescu said this month after he was tasked with forming a government by President Nicușor Dan. “What I can promise is seriousness in the use of public money and predictability for the economy . . . For a while, let us put what unites us ahead of what divides us.”
Key developments:
- Luca Niculescu becomes prime minister after being nominated by President Nicușor Dan.
- The government includes independent ministers and members of the Social Democratic Party (PSD).
- Romania faces pressure to reduce its EU-leading budget deficit and implement fiscal reforms.
- Centrist parties outside the coalition have pledged case-by-case support for legislation.
