US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met India’s External Affairs Minister Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar in Mumbai on Tuesday (20 Oct), with talks focused on strengthening the US-India strategic partnership.

The officials discussed regional and global issues, including developments in the Middle East, while exploring further cooperation in energy, defence, technology and trade.

Key developments:

  • Energy cooperation: Rubio said increased US energy exports could help diversify India’s supply chains and support its growing domestic demand.
  • Defence and technology: Both sides noted progress in defence cooperation, civil nuclear ties and technology partnerships.
  • Indo-Pacific security: Rubio and Jaishankar reaffirmed the importance of maintaining a free and secure Indo-Pacific.

Speaking at the Freedom 250 reception marking the 250th anniversary of American independence, Rubio said the US-India relationship was helping “write the story of the 21st century”, while Jaishankar said “expanding our convergence is key to deepening our ties” as the global order undergoes change.
