Cameroon’s parliament has approved a constitutional amendment reintroducing the role of vice president, in a move framed by authorities as a safeguard for political continuity.
In a joint session of the National Assembly and Senate, lawmakers voted 200 to 18, with four abstentions, to pass the bill. President Paul Biya, in power since 1982, must promulgate the legislation within 15 days.
The reform establishes a clear line of succession while prompting debate over executive authority.
• The vice president will automatically assume office if the president dies, resigns, or is incapacitated
• The role will be appointed and dismissed by the president, serving the remainder of the seven-year term
• Interim leaders will be barred from constitutional reforms or contesting subsequent elections
• Critics argue the amendment reinforces centralisation of power
Joshua Osih, chairman of the Social Democratic Front, said the measure overlooks governance reforms and national unity concerns amid ongoing conflict since 2017.
