China’s President Xi Jinping has called for the international rule of law to be upheld amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, during talks in Beijing with Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi.

In remarks reported by state media, Xi Jinping warned against selectively applying international norms, as tensions escalate following inconclusive US–Iran talks and continued disruption in the Strait of Hormuz.

Xi told Sheikh Khaled that China was willing to work with the UAE to build a more robust, resilient, and dynamic strategic partnership.

Separately, Chinese Premier Li Qiang said Beijing is engaging regional actors to support de-escalation, while expanding economic cooperation with the UAE.

Key developments:

• Xi Jinping emphasised legal consistency in global governance amid the Iran conflict

• Li Qiang highlighted China’s role in promoting Gulf stability and ceasefire efforts

• UAE–China trade reached $113.1bn in 2025, with plans to expand cooperation in AI and energy

• Agreements signed on technology, agriculture, and investment during the visit

The visit underscores deepening China–UAE strategic ties, alongside broader efforts to strengthen China–Gulf economic integration and diplomatic engagement.
