Russia and China announced a series of new cooperation agreements following talks between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Beijing on (20 May).

The leaders said they had signed joint statements covering strategic partnership, international cooperation and bilateral development. 

Both sides highlighted expanding trade, energy cooperation, education exchanges and coordination through organisations including BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation.

Key developments included:

  • Bilateral trade remained above US$200 billion for a third consecutive year, according to Xi Jinping
  • Vladimir Putin said Russia-China trade reached nearly US$240 billion in 2025
  • Around 40 intergovernmental and corporate agreements were signed during the visit
  • Both leaders confirmed the launch of the Russia-China Year of Education initiative

The talks also focused on global governance, multilateral cooperation and closer economic integration across Eurasia.
