US President Donald Trump told reporters on Monday (13 April) that Iran would like to make a deal ‘very very badly,’ adding that the ‘sticking point’ in recent talks were over Iran’s nuclear capabilities, stating that Iran “will never have a nuclear weapon” and insisting any agreement depends on that condition.

The remarks come as tensions continue to escalate following the inconclusive US–Iran talks in Islamabad and the launch of a US naval blockade of Iranian ports and the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy chokepoint.

Responding to questions on the wider strategy, Trump said the US blockade approach could include multiple objectives, saying it was “maybe everything” in terms of pressure and negotiation outcomes, while accusing Iran of “blackmail or extortion” through control of maritime routes.

Recent developments show the US enforcing the blockade from Monday, with warnings of interceptions against Iranian-linked vessels, while Iran has condemned the action as illegal and threatened retaliation.
