Japan and Poland have agreed to elevate bilateral ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, following a summit in Tokyo between Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae of Japan and Prime Minister Donald Tusk of Poland on Wednesday (15 April).

The leaders reaffirmed commitment to a rules-based international order, closer security coordination, and expanded economic cooperation, citing a more complex global security environment.

They also signed a Social Security Agreement and additional cooperation frameworks spanning agriculture and space.

Key developments:

• Bilateral ties upgraded from a 2015 Strategic Partnership to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership

• Around 400 Japanese companies operating in Poland, supporting economic growth

• Agreement to deepen cooperation in security, AI, infrastructure, and energy

• Joint support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and post-war reconstruction efforts

Both leaders stressed alignment on Indo-Pacific and Euro-Atlantic security, opposition to unilateral changes by force, and the importance of resilient supply chains and technological cooperation.
