Tensions between the United States and Iran have escalated after US President Donald Trump said a US naval destroyer seized the Iranian-flagged vessel Touska in the Gulf of Oman.

US Central Command stated the ship was intercepted after repeated warnings, while Donald Trump said the USS Spruance disabled it for breaching a US naval blockade. Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters condemned the action as a ceasefire violation and warned of retaliation.

Confusion surrounds proposed peace talks in Pakistan. US officials indicated a delegation led by Steve Witkoff would attend, while Iranian-linked media reported Tehran would not participate under ongoing maritime restrictions.

  • The US claims the Touska was sanctioned for “illegal activity”.
  • Iran has imposed controls in the Strait of Hormuz, citing security concerns.
  • JD Vance, US Vice-President, was expected but not confirmed to attend talks.
  • Mike Waltz, US Ambassador to the UN, signalled readiness to escalate or de-escalate.

Donald Trump also warned of potential strikes on Iranian infrastructure, raising concerns over further regional escalation.

“We’re offering a very fair and reasonable DEAL, and I hope they take it because, if they don’t, the United States is going to knock out every single Power Plant, and every single Bridge, in Iran. NO MORE MR. NICE GUY!,” Trump wrote.
