The Iran war has exposed structural vulnerabilities in the European aviation sector, with rising jet fuel costs driven by global oil disruption rather than climate policy, according to Transport & Environment (T&E).

Europe relies on imports for over 95% of aviation fuel, with around 30% linked to Middle East supply routes, leaving airlines highly exposed to geopolitical shocks.

  • T&E analysis shows jet fuel costs have risen by €88 per passenger on long-haul flights and €29 within Europe since late February.
  • A Paris–New York flight now carries an estimated €129 fuel cost increase per passenger.
  • Industry calls to weaken EU ETS and ReFuelEU rules contrast with findings that fossil fuel volatility is the primary cost driver.

Diane Vitry, Aviation Director at T&E, said the crisis highlights dependency on imported oil, urging stronger investment in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and long-term energy independence.
