Cambodia and China have held their first “2+2 Strategic Dialogue Mechanism” meeting in Phnom Penh, bringing together foreign and defence ministers to strengthen political and security cooperation.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Defence Minister Dong Jun met Cambodian Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn and Defence Minister Tea Seiha.

  • The mechanism was proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping during his April visit last year
  • Talks focus on cooperation, regional peace, and implementation of existing frameworks
  • Hun Sen and Prime Minister Hun Manet are holding separate meetings with Chinese officials
  • China remains Cambodia’s largest investor, with trade reaching $19.73bn last year

The meeting comes amid continued international attention on Cambodia’s Ream Naval Base, where US officials have raised concerns over potential Chinese military access, allegations Cambodia denies.
