The 2026 IISS Shangri-La Dialogue has opened in Singapore, bringing together defence officials and security experts from across Asia, the United States and Europe for discussions on regional and global security challenges.

The three-day summit, held from May 29 to May 31 at the Shangri-La Hotel, is regarded as Asia’s leading defence and security forum. Discussions are expected to focus on Indo-Pacific stability, defence cooperation and geopolitical tensions.

Key developments include:

  • US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth is scheduled to deliver a major address.
  • Delegates are expected to discuss tensions involving Iran, Taiwan and the South China Sea.
  • Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae’s updated “Free and Open Indo-Pacific” strategy is drawing regional attention.
  • China has sent a lower-level delegation from the People’s Liberation Army instead of Defence Minister Dong Jun.

Other attendees include Japanese Defence Minister Koizumi Shinjiro, Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and Singapore Defence Minister Chan Chun Sing.
