Speaking alongside Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis at a Kathimerini event in Athens moderated by Executive Editor Alexis Papachelas on Saturday (25 April), French President Emmanuel Macron outlined the need for a more assertive European strategic agenda.

Macron described the current geopolitical climate as a “unique moment”, urging Europe to “wake up” and act with greater confidence. He argued that US foreign policy has, for over a decade, prioritised domestic interests and strategic competition with China over European concerns.

Macron stressed that Europe must “act and decide” to “increase our independence”, highlighting the need for faster, more coordinated policymaking. He added that even with future leadership changes in Washington, a return to previous transatlantic norms is unlikely.
