Malta’s governing Labour Party has secured a fourth consecutive general election victory, with Prime Minister Robert Abela claiming a renewed mandate despite a reduced majority compared with the 2022 election.
Preliminary results indicated Labour remained on course for a comfortable parliamentary majority following Saturday’s vote, while the opposition Nationalist Party acknowledged defeat.
Opposition leader Alex Borg said his party had significantly reduced Labour’s winning margin compared with the previous election, describing the result as disappointing but encouraging supporters to remain hopeful.
Key developments:
- Labour Party secured a historic fourth successive election victory.
- Voter turnout reached 87.4%, slightly higher than in 2022.
- The opposition reduced Labour’s margin from roughly 39,000 votes in 2022 to around 18,000 votes.
- Malta’s economy grew by 4% in 2025, remaining among Europe’s strongest performers.
Abela, who called the election a year early, is expected to be sworn in for a new term on Monday.
