Egypt’s military said thousands of troops backed by fighter jets, helicopter gunships, tanks and artillery have completed the main phase of a live-fire “tactical war” exercise involving units from the 3rd Field Army.

The 3rd Field Army is partly stationed in the Sinai Peninsula, which served as the main theatre of operations during Egypt’s wars with Israel in 1948, 1956, 1967 and 1973. Footage released by the military showed coordinated air and ground operations in a desert environment, including tanks, artillery, rockets and combat aircraft.

Defence Minister Gen Ashraf Zaher attended the final stage of the exercise and said the armed forces remained prepared to protect Egypt’s national security amid ongoing regional challenges.

Israeli media have responded to the Egyptian drills by accusing Cairo of provocation and of breaching the peace treaty’s limits on the number of troops and types of weapons allowed in Sinai.

Egypt and Israel signed a peace treaty in 1979 widely viewed as a cornerstone of regional stability. However, relations have deteriorated since the Gaza war began in October 2023, with Cairo accusing Israel of genocide and deliberate starvation in Gaza, claims Israel denies.
