China and Australia pledged to deepen strategic communication and economic cooperation during the eighth China-Australia Foreign and Strategic Dialogue in Beijing on Wednesday (29 April), where energy security and trade resilience featured prominently.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong discussed bilateral ties, regional stability and supply chain security amid continuing disruption linked to the Middle East conflict.
Wong said China had agreed to facilitate engagement with Australian businesses on jet fuel exports, describing the move as “an important step” towards easing supply pressures affecting the Indo-Pacific region.
During her talks with Chinese officials, Wong added: “We were able to speak frankly, as we do, about those areas of difference, including consular issues, human rights, foreign interference, and regional and international security.”
Wang Yi said that China is ready to work with Australia to implement the important common understandings reached by the leaders of the two countries, strengthen communication and coordination, deepen mutually beneficial cooperation, and consolidate the positive momentum in bilateral ties, in a bid to bring more certainty to the region and the world.
He emphasized that the two countries should maintain high-level exchanges, enhance strategic mutual trust and expand areas of cooperation to continuously inject positive elements into the bilateral relationship.
