The Pentagon has announced plans to withdraw around 5,000 US troops from Germany over the next six to twelve months.
Chief Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said the decision followed a review of US military force posture in Europe and operational requirements. Despite the reduction, more than 30,000 American troops are expected to remain stationed in Germany.
The announcement comes amid growing tensions between Washington and several European allies over the US-led conflict with Iran. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz recently criticised US strategy in the region, prompting a public response from Trump.
Key developments:
- Around 5,000 US troops will leave Germany within a year.
- Germany currently hosts over 36,000 US military personnel.
- Ramstein Air Base remains a major US and NATO operational hub.
- Trump also suggested possible troop reductions in Italy and Spain.
