US President Donald Trump has announced that the United States will deploy an additional 5,000 troops to Poland, days after the Pentagon paused a previously planned deployment of 4,000 personnel.
Writing on Truth Social, Trump linked the decision to Washington’s relationship with Polish President Karol Nawrocki, a long-time supporter of the US president.
The announcement comes as the White House reviews US military commitments in Europe under its “America First” strategy.
Key developments:
- The Pentagon recently described the cancelled 4,000-troop deployment as a “temporary delay”.
- The US earlier confirmed plans to withdraw 5,000 troops from Germany.
- US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is expected to discuss NATO burden sharing at a summit in Sweden.
- Poland continues to position the US as Europe’s primary security guarantor amid the Ukraine war.
The US military deployment in Germany is by far its biggest in Europe, currently at more than 36,000 active duty troops compared to about 12,000 troops in Italy and a further 10,000 in the UK.
