Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has been sworn in for a seventh term, extending his nearly 40-year rule after winning the country’s January 2026 presidential election.

The inauguration took place at Kololo Independence Grounds in Kampala, where thousands attended the ceremony. Uganda’s Electoral Commission said Museveni secured 71.65% of the vote.

Opposition leader Bobi Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, rejected the result, alleging ballot irregularities and intimidation during the campaign period.

Key developments:

  • Uganda’s election took place during a nationwide internet blackout. Rights groups reported arrests, disappearances and pressure on opposition supporters.
  • Museveni has removed presidential term and age limits during his time in office.
  • General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Museveni’s son and Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, is viewed as a possible successor.

Museveni, who took power in 1986, is credited with economic growth and restoring stability after years of political turmoil.
