China’s leadership held high-level talks with Tajik President Emomali Rahmon in Beijing on Tuesday (12 May), focusing on trade, regional security, infrastructure and multilateral cooperation.

During meetings with Chinese Premier Li Qiang and Chinese President Xi Jinping, both sides reaffirmed support for strengthening the China-Tajikistan comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership and expanding Belt and Road cooperation.

Xi Jinping said China and Tajikistan would remain “good neighbours” and called for deeper cooperation in trade, green energy, artificial intelligence and digital development.

Key developments included:

  • Expansion of cooperation in digital economy, clean energy and infrastructure
  • Support for increased Chinese investment and imports from Tajikistan
  • Coordination through the United Nations and Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO)
  • Greater cooperation on regional security and counterterrorism

Both countries also pledged to increase cultural, educational and people-to-people exchanges.
