Uganda has begun an emergency food relief operation in the Karamoja region following reports of at least 19 hunger-related deaths linked to prolonged drought and widespread crop failure.
The government has allocated 45 billion Ugandan shillings (approximately US$12.4 million / £9 million) to distribute 9,400 tonnes of food over the next two months.
Sam Engola, Minister for Disaster Preparedness and Refugees, said the programme aims to ensure food reaches affected communities, while John Baptist Lokii, Minister for Karamoja, announced plans to provide drought-resistant seeds before the next planting season.
