North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has instructed senior military officials to strengthen frontline units and transform the border with South Korea into an “impregnable fortress”, according to state media.
The remarks were delivered during a military meeting reported by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on Monday. Kim also called for faster military modernisation and updated operational concepts across multiple domains.
Kim “set forth plans for…strengthening the first-line units and other major units in military and technical aspects as an important decision to more thoroughly deter war,” the KCNA report said.
Projects to modernise the military “should be stepped up to newly define the concept of operations in all spheres,” he was also quoted as saying.
The developments come as North Korea continues adopting a more confrontational approach towards Seoul, despite the arrival of the North Korean women’s football team in South Korea for the first time in eight years.
Key developments:
- Kim Jong Un urged commanders to improve deterrence and reassess views towards the “arch enemy”.
- Pyongyang signalled expanded military planning across cyber, electronic, space and underwater operations.
- Analysts linked the strategy to lessons observed from the war in Ukraine and modern drone warfare.
- North Korea recently removed references to reunification with South Korea from its constitution.
