North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has criticised what he described as a resurgence of modern ultra-nationalism, citing the “America First” doctrine, Zionism, “Ukrainian neo-Nazism”, and Japanese militarism during a meeting of the Workers’ Party of Korea.
He argued that growing geopolitical rivalry and international instability justified North Korea’s political direction while reaffirming the country’s commitment to strengthening its defence capabilities.
Key developments:
- Kim Jong Un pledged to expand North Korea’s nuclear arsenal and maintain an “absolutely reliable” self-defence deterrent.
- He criticised expanding US–South Korea military cooperation, including the Nuclear Consultative Group and South Korea’s nuclear-powered submarine ambitions.
- Kim also accused major powers of pursuing “gangster-like and unlimited geopolitical greed” that increases the risk of conflict.
North Korea’s ruling party reiterated its position that nuclear weapons remain central to the country’s national defence strategy.
