Mozambique has secured funding to maintain the deployment of Rwandan security forces in the insurgency-affected Cabo Delgado province, according to Rwanda Foreign Minister Olivier Nduhungirehe.

Rwanda deployed troops to northern Mozambique in 2021 at the request of the Mozambican government to support operations against an Islamic State-linked insurgency affecting the gas-rich region.

Key developments:

  • Olivier Nduhungirehe said Rwanda will now work directly with the Mozambican government on funding arrangements.
  • The European Union had previously supported the mission but was reportedly reluctant to renew funding.
  • Rwanda warned in March 2026 that troop withdrawals were possible without adequate financial support.
  • Improved security conditions contributed to TotalEnergies restarting its $20 billion LNG project, although insurgent attacks continue.

The financial terms and duration of the agreement have not been publicly disclosed.
