Bolivian President Rodrigo Paz has announced a 50% reduction in his salary and those of cabinet ministers as Bolivia faces mounting political unrest, road blockades and supply shortages.

Speaking in Sucre on Monday (25 May), Paz said the measure reflected the government’s “commitment to the country” as protests continue over austerity policies, inflation and rising living costs.

Key developments:

  • Protests and roadblocks have disrupted supplies in La Paz and El Alto
  • Shortages of food, fuel and medicine have affected markets, hospitals and petrol stations
  • Paz has defended spending cuts and fuel subsidy reductions as necessary economic reforms
  • Former president Evo Morales has called for Paz to resign and hold new elections

The unrest began in early May during Bolivia’s worst economic crisis in four decades and has increasingly evolved into broader political demands for government change.
