Greece has begun implementing a long-standing agreement with Egypt that will allow up to 5,000 Egyptian seasonal farm workers to work legally in the country’s agricultural sector.

According to Christos Giannakakis, Board Member of the Hellenic Union of Agricultural Cooperatives, the recruitment process is already underway, with initial applications being processed through the Greek embassy in Cairo.

Key developments:

  • Up to 5,000 seasonal agricultural workers can be recruited under the agreement.
  • Around 150 applicants have already entered the approval process.
  • More than 36 Greek employers have expressed interest in participating.
  • Seasonal workers may stay for up to nine months, with pathways to longer-term permits under specific conditions.

Greek officials view the programme as a structured response to labour shortages affecting harvests of peaches, cherries, olives, kiwis and citrus fruit. The initiative aims to support legal labour mobility, improve workforce stability and strengthen agricultural production while maintaining regulated employment and accommodation standards.
