India and Venezuela have moved to strengthen cooperation in the energy sector following talks between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Venezuelan Interim President Delcy Rodríguez in New Delhi.

According to Rudrendra Tandon, Secretary (East) in India’s Ministry of External Affairs, discussions focused on collaboration across both upstream and downstream energy projects, with Caracas viewing India as a preferred partner in the sector. The talks come as global energy markets face disruption linked to the Middle East crisis.

Key developments:

  • India and Venezuela discussed expanded cooperation in oil production, refining and broader energy projects.
  • India imported approximately 427,000 barrels per day of Venezuelan crude in May, making it the country’s second-largest buyer.
  • Delcy Rodríguez is visiting Indian refining facilities and meeting energy industry leaders during her trip.
  • Venezuela is emerging as one of India’s leading crude oil suppliers as New Delhi seeks to diversify energy sources.
