US President Donald Trump said Washington wants Cuba to become a stable and prosperous country, while signalling that his administration intends to maintain pressure on the Cuban government as the island faces a deep economic crisis.

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on Thursday (4 June), Trump described Cuba as a country struggling with shortages of energy, investment and resources.

Trump said Cuba had “sort of collapsed” and claimed the United States would “take care of it” in the future. He also stated that the US has “some very good plans for Cuba” and said Washington wants to see a “nicely run country that can feed its people.”

The US president indicated that Cuban-Americans could play a role in the country’s future development, saying he would like to see people “go back and let them invest in Cuba if they’d like.” He also said the United States would “treat Cuba well” while continuing to oppose the current political system.

The comments came as the Trump administration expanded sanctions against the Cuban leadership. Washington recently announced new measures targeting Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel, members of his family and relatives of former leader Raúl Castro, marking the latest escalation in US pressure on Havana.

The sanctions also affected several Cuban state institutions and military-linked entities. Cuban officials criticised the measures and accused the United States of interference in the country’s internal affairs.

The latest developments follow months of increasing tensions between Washington and Havana. The Trump administration has tightened sanctions, targeted Cuba’s military-linked business sector, expanded restrictions on foreign companies operating on the island, and increased pressure on Cuba’s energy supplies.

These measures have coincided with ongoing economic difficulties, fuel shortages and power disruptions across the country, while both governments continue to exchange criticism over the future of US-Cuba relations.
