A senior United Nations official has warned that the opportunity to prevent a major escalation in El Obeid, North Kordofan, is rapidly narrowing as fighting intensifies between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Briefing the UN Security Council, Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacekeeping Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo said increased drone attacks and expanding RSF positions have heightened risks to civilians. She urged all parties to exercise restraint, protect civilians and engage in efforts towards a ceasefire and a Sudanese-led political process.
Key developments:
- UN warns around 500,000 civilians in El Obeid are at risk if fighting escalates.
- Drone attacks have intensified, disrupting humanitarian access across Darfur and Kordofan.
- UNICEF Deputy Executive Director Hannan Sulieman said nearly 80% of reported child casualties in the first four months of 2026 were linked to drone attacks.
The UN continues diplomatic efforts alongside regional and international partners to reduce violence and support negotiations.
