US President Donald Trump urged NATO members to accelerate progress towards the Alliance’s 5% defence spending target as he addressed reporters following the NATO Summit 2026 in Ankara, Türkiye.
Reflecting on the leaders’ working session, Trump said Allies had reviewed national plans to increase defence investment and argued that momentum was building across the Alliance. “They’re making great progress,” he said, adding that he believed “in all cases, they’re going to be answering the call.” He also urged governments to move more quickly towards the benchmark, describing 5% as “the number it should have been for years.”
Trump also highlighted what he described as a strong sense of unity among Allied leaders, saying there was “tremendous unity in that room” and that nations had shown support for the United States and NATO’s collective security objectives.
The two-day summit concluded with Allies reaffirming their commitment to Article 5 collective defence, reviewing progress towards the 5% defence investment goal, announcing more than €50 billion in new defence procurement commitments, expanding defence industrial cooperation, launching new initiatives on drones, surveillance, space and logistics, and reaffirming continued military support for Ukraine
