Keir Starmer has delivered his farewell address outside 10 Downing Street, confirming he will resign as Prime Minister after formally tendering his resignation to King Charles III.
Reflecting on his time in office, Starmer said “my work is done”, describing it as “the privilege of my life” to serve as Prime Minister. He said he was “confident that Britain is now stronger and fairer than it was two years ago”, citing progress on the economy, public services, immigration, defence and the UK’s international standing.
Looking ahead, Starmer warned that “our enemies will stop at nothing to divide us” and urged the country to remain united. Passing leadership to Andy Burnham, he wished the incoming Prime Minister “every success”, adding: “He has my full support.”
Attention will now turn to Andy Burnham, who will form a government under constitutional convention. He is expected to deliver his first address as Prime Minister before beginning the process of appointing a new Cabinet and outlining his government’s immediate priorities.
