The Quad Foreign Ministers have reaffirmed their commitment to a Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP) during talks in Manila, held alongside the ASEAN-related Foreign Ministers’ Meetings.
Japan’s Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi met with Australia’s Foreign Minister Penny Wong, India’s External Affairs Minister Dr Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The ministers also issued a joint press release on cooperation with ASEAN.
Key developments included:
- Reaffirmed support for ASEAN Centrality, unity and the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP).
- Agreement to strengthen cooperation on maritime security, economic security, critical and emerging technologies, and humanitarian assistance.
- Discussions on developments in the East China Sea, South China Sea, the Middle East, critical minerals, North Korea, and cybersecurity.
The ministers also agreed to maintain close coordination ahead of the next Quad Leaders’ Summit.
