UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham has ruled out an early general election, saying his government’s focus will be on delivering its manifesto and addressing challenges facing the UK.
The next UK general election is not expected until 2029, unless an early election is called. Parliament is due to automatically dissolve in July 2029, with the latest possible polling day in August 2029.
Speaking to BBC presenter Laura Kuenssberg, Burnham said: “There is no early general election”, arguing that voters had already given the government a mandate through the parliamentary system.
He added: “I just think what I most need to do is get Britain focused on getting the country back where it should be, getting it working.”
Burnham said he wanted to pursue a “new politics” focused on rebuilding public confidence, adding: “Let’s all face forward together and get this country working.”
The Prime Minister’s first week in office has included announcing measures aimed at easing cost-of-living pressures, appointing his Cabinet, launching No 10 North, pledging to end rough sleeping, and setting out plans for a 10-year national strategy.
