New Zealand Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Peters and Indonesia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Sugiono have reaffirmed their commitment to expanding bilateral cooperation following the 13th Joint Ministerial Commission in Auckland on Friday (28 Aug).
The ministers reviewed progress under the 2025–2029 Plan of Action, highlighting closer cooperation in trade, defence, renewable energy, education and regional security ahead of the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2028.
Key developments:
- Bilateral trade remains on track towards a NZ$6 billion target by 2029, supported by expanded air links and investment cooperation.
- New Zealand pledged continued support for Indonesia’s renewable energy sector, including geothermal projects and the NZMATES programme.
- Both countries reaffirmed cooperation on defence, counter-terrorism, maritime security and ASEAN-led regional initiatives.
- The ministers also discussed Gaza, Ukraine, Myanmar and the South China Sea, reiterating support for international law, humanitarian access and peaceful dispute resolution.
